Man where I have been? Mr Kayongo was recognized for his efforts towards global health by receiving the CNN Hero Award in 2011.Sorry I should start from the beginning but I just can’t believe that I’m just hearing about this brotha now. Derreck was born in Uganda where he lived with his sister, mama & dada until the civil war happened. In fear for their lives, the Kayongo family left for the USA. In America he pursued  further education and worked in several NGO’s.In one interview he explained how the global soap project came about. He remenbered once staying at a hotel when he first moved to the States and finding in the bathroom 3 kinds of soap, face soap, body wash, and shampoo. He just couldn’t believe it being that in his home country the bare necessities were not available. The idea started germing in his head ,as a good man he shared that

photo via Andy Allo Facebook Andy Allo via facebook So for a while I’ve been seeing Andy’s pictures randomly at various events on Essence.com She was so strikingly beautiful so I had to find out more about turns out she’s half American (maman side) & half Cameroonian (papa side) so the African woman in me was like heyyy she’s one of us.She was born in Cameroon, she was into music at a young age, her mum taught her quite young how to play piano.12 years ago she moved to the states and it’s when she joined school choir that she realized that she was divinely gifted with a beautiful voice. When she finished high school she went to college while still doing the music thing. In 2009 she released her first album and industry word to mouth lead her music to be heard by Prince itself. They met, he enjoyed her talent

This is my kind of business venture:) Thanks Nicole Lenox for introducing me to their work:) Delali & Myriam are the co-founders of the digital platform  We Are Onyx which provides makeup & lifestyle products for 25 $/month. This business motto follows the one of most beauty surprise boxes where every month you get through the mail a beautifully packaged box filled with goodies. These ladies were smart in creating a product geared toward black women. Through Delali’s interview with curlunderstood.com I learned that initially she was working in the film industry on the corporate side. The idea came to her because one day she wanted to learn via youtube how to take care of her natural hair on her own.Once there she realized that she wasn’t the only one with questions. She spoke to her now business partner Myriam and her boyfriend and started the We are Onyx website with

You know anytime I hear about one of us meaning from Africa from the South, East , West or from the North in this case who’s doing big things I always want to share here.I’ve been researching whether she has Maroccan or Egyptian roots but I couldn’t confirm BUT hey either way both countries are in Africa.Samira has worked in the fashion industry for a while now either writing or styling now she is over at Elle giving directions to what your fav’ stars should look like either on the cover or in the pages in the mag.For example the Melissa McCarty cover that got so much attention last year was her idea.I like it ,there’s nothing wrong with it for me. This single mama of one’s personal style is clean , chic, laid back, it reads to me “hey I know fashion, I don’t need to wear everything all

Rida is not sleeping so let me write lol..It’s 2AM “I feel like I am child of the revolution” . Even though I don’t understand Thandiswa’s native dialect , her passion and authenticity touch me.When I look at videos of her, je suis scotch. Her devotion to delivering her message “her way”, her style, the way she does her hair, the way her voice goes from one register to another, the way she carries herself beautifully, her energy…I wanna see her in concert and get lost in her music. I haven’t followed her for a while so I wanted to see what she was up to. She has two albums a son actif, I hope she comes out with new music soon. She was born to two journalists parents and grew up with books around and a great awareness to the struggle and the uprise of her country. On her webbie she

This is one of my fav’ personal fav’ pic I took couple of years ago at a dance show. It’s blurry but I love it, I love it because of the movement in the moment. One of my fav’ things to do is take pictures .I love portrait photography, street style, events photography.I love underlining real emotions implied in the gesture, the movement and the imperfections. I would like to develop a stronger photographic personal sense. I recently found out about the interview series by renown celebrity photographer Mark Seliger on the Reserve Channel via youtube, I am learning lots through them. Yaye

If a young woman is beautiful but has no discipline, she will lose her looks as she grows older. If a plain woman is disciplined she will undoubtedly become more beautiful with time” Sophia Loren For startup here is  my beauty routine: Je m’enduis de karate before taking a shower avec une noisette d’huile d’amande . Step 2 :Take a shower with traditional Malian soap or wonderful smelling bar of soap (i loveeeee soaps), wash my face with l’occitane honey soap (cheap and so good) After shower, if my skin still feels a bit  dry un poco d’huile et c’est tout:) I love fruity ,dandyish perfume so selon  my feeling of the day,  I debate over pamplemousse, flowery, citrusy, orangy, ambreish, vanillaish scents:) Usually a touch of Lipgloss or chapstick qui me plait & I’m out & when I want to make a bigger effort, a darker lipstick and I’m off! C’est tout. When I read on

“There will be friends who never have a kind thing to say or an encouraged word to offer.Throw them a kiss, then show them the door.” Gaby Union/Ebony October 2012 Today was a wonderful day! One of my dearest friend is in town. She’s the kind of  friend that ‘s always available to listen, to encourage , to support you all the way, laugh when you need to make light of a situation. She’s the kind of friend that makes you smile, that keeps you positive despite the difficulties. I’m blessed to have a few, even if we don’t speak “on the regular” but when I think of them, I smile. For example on the picture above, my girl Mai was helping put on my shoes on my wedding day.It might not be much but it meant a lot because it was  a special time in your life. My very good

I often come across talented individuals that I mean to share with you guys here but I never did, don’t know why! But I’ve decided that from now I will post about the things, the people, the videos, the pictures that really inspire & move me.It could be for many reasons; one them being authenticity, the desire & ability to be oneself no matter what. The desire to teach people, to share your talent no matter how many people you reach, the most important thing  being able to reach someone. I think that Guadeloupean artist Ines Khai embodies just that. As soon as she opens her mouth, you are transported to the island of guadeloupe, in the mystery of the ancestry, in the mysticism of the drumming. She is a story teller, her band is composed of two Congolese musicians, an American & Irish musicians. Her music is a mix of traditional
